Actor Jussie Smollett has been attacked in an apparent homophobic attack which left the Empire star hospitalised, TMZ has reported.

According to the entertainment website, the incident happened at around 2am local time (7pm AEDT) on Tuesday in Chicago.

According to reports the 35-year-old was set upon by two people wearing ski masks who “placed a noose” around the actor’s neck.

Shortly after arriving in the city from New York, Smollett was walking when two unknown offenders approached him and gained his attention by yelling out racial and homophobic slurs towards him. The offenders began to batter Smollett with their hands about the face and poured an unknown chemical substance on him.

During the attack, one of the offenders wrapped a rope around Smollett’s neck.

The offenders later fled the scene and Smollett was self-transported to Northwestern Hospital and he is said to currently be in good condition.

US website ThatGrapeJuice.Net also published abusive noted that Smollett had recently received with cut out letters spelling, “You will die black f**.”

Police sources reportedly told TMZ that Chicago authorities are investigating the incident as a hate crime.

Smollett was reportedly treated at a Chicago hospital, but has been released.

The actor confirmed he’s gay in 2015 during an interview with Ellen DeGeneres, during which he said he hoped his coming out would help other gay people feel less alone.

“The victim is fully cooperating with investigators and we ask anyone with information about this incident to contact Area Central Detectives at 312-747-8382 or report it anonymously to www.cpdtip.com.”
