A student gunman opened fire in the halls of a Crimea college Wednesday, killing at least 17 people and injuring another 40.
Russia’s top investigative body identified the shooter as 18-year-old Vladislav Roslyakov. He was armed with a rifle when he arrived at Kerch Polytechnic College, a vocational school located in the Black Sea City of Kerch, in the early afternoon.
Investigators said CCTV footage from the scene shows the suspect gunning down his victims before killing himself. They believe he acted alone.
All of the victims, most of them students, have died of gunshot wounds.
Russian President Vladimir Putin condemned the attack as “a tragic evil” and offered his condolences to victims’ families during a news conference in Sochi.
Russian officials have so far offered a series of explanations for the deadly incident. It was initially reported as a gas leak before authorities put out a statement saying an explosive device rigged with shrapnel went off in the school’s canteen around lunchtime.
Several witnesses though told local media earlier Wednesday that at least some of the victims were attacked by a gunman.
Authorities were previously investigating the incident as a terrorist attack but are now treating it as a mass murder.
