A Georgia teenager committed suicide after accidentally shooting and killing his friend, authorities said.
Devin Hodges, 15, was showing 17-year-old Chad Carless a hand gun Monday when he accidentally fired and struck him, the Gwinnett County Police Department said. Hodges then ran off and turned the gun on himself.
The boys were hanging out with two other friends in a shed in Lawrenceville when the accidental shooting occurred, according to police. One of them called 911, but cops said Carless was dead upon arrival. They later saw Hodges running between two homes near the shed, where he then took his own life.
Neighbors were shocked by the news, with some scrambling to know who the boys were.
“You know, it’s New Year’s Eve and to have this happen so close to home, it’s just really devastating. And now, we’re just in a state of panic to know who these two children are,” one neighbor who didn’t identify herself told WSB-TV. “Are they children of our community where we can reach out to their families? So this was just really unexpected. Nothing like this ever (happened) in this neighborhood.”
One neighbor allegedly said the teens were not from the neighborhood.
Andrew Tran, who lives in the area, said he wants to help identify the teenagers.
“Now, we’re just in a state of panic to know who these two children are, and are they children of our community where we can reach out to their families?” Tran said.
Authorities were continuing to investigate the shooting Tuesday afternoon.
