Something went wrong.

Two children are among the 12 dead Friday in a pair of horrific Brazilian bank robberies gone horribly awry.

Five hostages were among the casualties in one of the attempted heists in Milagres, located in northeastern Brazil. They were apparently members of a family returning from a nearby airport when the would-be robbers abducted them, said Milagres mayor Lielson Landim.

Two suspects were apprehended, according to authorities.

Landim mentioned that the dead children were between the ages of 10 and 13, according to Agence France-Presse.

“A heavily armed group arrived in the town in the early hours and went to the center of town, where they tried to commit the crime,” read a statement for the office of Andre Costa, the secretary for security in the Brazilian state of Ceara. “There was an exchange of fire between the suspects and police.”

In addition to the death of six gang members, the report states “another six people died from gunshots.”

Various explosives and weapons, as well as three bank vehicles used in the robberies were recovered.

G1, a local website, reported the robbers blockaded a street with a truck and halted the vehicle carrying the family. When cops arrived, the robbers reportedly “executed” the hostages.

“I’ve never seen anything like it. I stayed inside my home, cowering and afraid,” local resident Mendonca de Santa Helena told reporters. “I heard people yelling and crying. It was horrible.”
