Alvaro Morata follows Eden Hazard’s orders to help Chelsea thrash Stoke City
Chelsea got back to winning ways in the Premier League this weekend with an emphatic 4-0 victory away to Stoke City.
The Blues continued their fine record against the Potters, and raced into an early lead as Alvaro Morata scored in the second minute of the game.
Pedro added a fine second on the half-hour mark before Morata stole the show in the second half with two more to add some gloss to the scoreline.
Star man – Alvaro Morata
There’s been plenty of debate this week as to whether Morata can replace Diego Costa, and he’s answered his doubters in some style.
On hand to score after just 80 seconds, the summer signing from Real Madrid netted a high-class hat-trick to make easy work of Stoke this afternoon.
An honourable mention must go too to Cesar Azpilicueta, who captained the side, set up the opener with a raking cross-field ball, and seamlessly switched to left wing-back later in the game with minimal fuss.
Failed to impress – Darren Fletcher
A major error for Pedro’s goal, Darren Fletcher will not want to watch the match highlights back again later.
Brought in from West Brom over the summer precisely for his experience and composure, the Scot made a real mess of things with a poorly-judged back-pass that only gifted Chelsea their second goal.
All in all, playing against Chelsea’s midfield today just proved too much for him, with the former Manchester United man making just two successful tackles in the entire game.
What surprised us – Eden Hazard still can’t get a start
Just how much longer must Eden Hazard wait to get the nod in Conte’s side again?
One of the best attacking players in Europe on his day, he was deemed fit enough to play for Belgium in the recent international break, but he had to wait 74 minutes to get on the pitch this afternoon.
While it’s understandable that Conte wants to ease Hazard back and didn’t risk him in a big game like against Arsenal, it’s hard to understand the logic in keeping him out of a relatively straightforward match like this one for so long.
